UNDERSTANDING THE RESOURCE

Oil Palm as an Industrial Raw Material

Oil palm is more than a source of cooking oil. It is a multi-stream agricultural raw material capable of generating food ingredients, vegetable oils, animal-feed materials, oleochemicals, biomass energy and other industrial products.

The principal commercial material is the Fresh Fruit Bunch (FFB). Processing the bunch produces crude palm oil and palm kernels, while fibre, shells, empty fruit bunches and other residues provide additional opportunities for energy generation, agriculture and industrial utilisation.

This makes oil palm particularly suitable for an integrated farm-to-industry value-chain model in which several products are recovered from the same raw-material stream.

RAW MATERIAL STREAMS

What Comes From Oil Palm?

Material Description Major Industrial Uses
Fresh Fruit Bunches Harvested bunches containing numerous oil-bearing palm fruits. Palm oil extraction and kernel recovery.
Palm Fruit / Mesocarp Fleshy portion of the fruit containing the principal palm oil. Crude palm oil, refined oils and food products.
Palm Kernel Oil-bearing seed located inside the hard shell. Palm kernel oil and palm kernel cake.
Palm Kernel Oil Oil extracted from the palm kernel. Food, soap, cosmetics and oleochemical applications.
Palm Kernel Cake Solid residue remaining after kernel oil extraction. Livestock and other animal-feed applications.
Palm Press Fibre Fibrous material separated during palm-oil extraction. Boiler fuel, process heat and biomass energy.
Palm Kernel Shell Hard shell surrounding the palm kernel. Biomass fuel and other industrial applications.
Empty Fruit Bunches Bunch structure remaining after the fruits have been removed. Mulch, compost, biomass and fibre-related applications.

VALUE CREATION

From Oil Palm to Industrial Products

01 Oil Palm Plantation Cultivation, harvesting and collection of fresh fruit bunches.
02 FFB Aggregation Collection, weighing, transportation and delivery to processors.
03 Palm Oil Milling Sterilisation, threshing, digestion, pressing and clarification.
04 Oil + Kernel Recovery Recovery of crude palm oil, palm kernels and processing residues.
05 Secondary Processing Refining, fractionation, kernel oil extraction and feed production.
06 Industrial Markets Food, cosmetics, soap, chemicals, feed, energy and manufacturing.
CIRCULAR ECONOMY

More Than Palm Oil

A modern oil-palm processing facility should aim to recover value from the major material streams generated during milling rather than treating them simply as waste.

FFB Palm Oil Food, refining and industrial applications.
KERNEL Kernel Oil + Cake Food, cosmetics, oleochemicals and animal feed.
FIBRE Biomass Energy Boiler fuel and process heat.
SHELL Biomass Fuel Energy and selected industrial applications.
EFB Organic Resource Mulch, compost, biomass and fibre applications.
NRMH TECHNICAL NOTE

Oil-palm processing generates several economically useful co-products. NRMH therefore treats the palm-oil mill as a potential multi-product industrial raw-material hub rather than a single-product facility.

PROCESSING TECHNOLOGY

Oil Palm Processing & Process Equipment

Oil-palm processing involves a sequence of mechanical and thermal operations designed to recover palm oil, palm kernels and other useful material streams from fresh fruit bunches.

Equipment selection depends on the quantity and quality of fresh fruit bunches available, required processing capacity, product quality targets, energy availability and the scale of the processing operation.

PROCESS FLOW

Primary Palm-Oil Processing

01 FFB Reception Weighing, inspection, unloading and temporary handling of fresh fruit bunches.
02 Sterilisation Steam treatment to loosen fruits, reduce enzymatic deterioration and facilitate subsequent processing.
03 Threshing Separation of sterilised fruits from the bunch stalks.
04 Digestion Mechanical and thermal treatment of the fruit to release oil-bearing mesocarp.
05 Pressing Mechanical extraction of crude palm oil from the digested fruit.
06 Clarification Separation of oil from water and suspended solids followed by purification and drying.

BACKWARD INTEGRATION

Opportunity for Indigenous Equipment Manufacturers

Nigeria's oil-palm value chain provides a significant market for locally designed, fabricated and maintained processing machinery. Indigenous equipment manufacturers can target individual machines, modular processing lines and complete small- and medium-scale mills.

NRMH EQUIPMENT PRINCIPLE

Process equipment listed in the NRMH directory should be matched to the intended processing capacity, raw-material supply, product specification, energy requirements, safety requirements and applicable standards. Equipment capacity should not be assumed solely from the machine name or supplier description.

INDUSTRIAL UTILISATION

Oil Palm Industrial Applications

Oil palm supports a broad range of downstream industries because both the principal oils and several processing co-products can be converted into commercially useful materials.

For NRMH, the strategic opportunity is to connect oil-palm production with processors, manufacturers, equipment providers, researchers and industrial buyers so that more value is retained within Nigeria.
